Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on the 18th of July 1994, was raised in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was the daughter of a black father, and a white mother. She grew up with her mom's family. Russell recalled how as a child she was viewed as unwelcome by her peers due to the complexion of her skin. The family was struggling financially and had to move 16 times to pursue her father's job. Russell expressed her feelings about how despite the difficulties, Russell said that she was always creative when she was a kid. She wanted to become a dancer, and later to be an artist. She was 18 when she started her first class in acting. She took money from her job to purchase a car and drive to Los Angeles to audition. When the money ran out she returned to work until she had enough money to be able to go back for another audition. That routine went on for four years until she got her first major television role.
